Board votes to fund ferry through fiscal year
February 28, 2012
The JAXPORT Board of Directors unanimously voted to end the port’s funding and operation of the St. Johns River Ferry effective Sept. 30, 2012. When the port took on the operation and its substantial yearly losses in 2007, the board at the time was clear: JAXPORT would commit to funding the ferry as long as it did not negatively impact core cargo business and job creation.
Addressing February’s board meeting, Mayor Alvin Brown stated: “For nearly five years, JAXPORT has generously operated the St. Johns River Ferry during a time that the city was unable to provide operational or capital funding due to its increasing fiscal challenges. I recognize that JAXPORT, like other governmental and business entities, finds itself with similarly difficult choices at a time when it is correctly focused on generating as much port business as possible.”
JAXPORT CEO Paul Anderson pledged continued port support of the community effort to find a new owner/operator to run the service.
