New cranes arrive at Blount Island
September 6, 2011
JAXPORT’s two new container cranes arrived at the Blount Island Marine Terminal during the Labor Day weekend. The cranes are worth $10 million apiece, stand 165 feet tall and can each lift 50 tons of cargo. They were manufactured in China by the world’s largest builder of port cranes, ZPMC. The cranes took 10 months to construct and three months to travel here aboard a specially designed ship. They will be in full operation later this fall, bringing the number of working container cranes at Blount Island up to eight and increasing the terminal’s cargo handling capabilities.
