JAXPORT employees celebrated Earth Day by cleaning up trash along a two-mile stretch of Heckscher Drive in North Jacksonville on Friday, April 24, between the JAXPORT Cruise Terminal and the port’s Blount Island Marine Terminal.

JAXPORT adopted this section of road in 2022 through the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) Adopt-A-Highway program. Since then, the port has made it an annual Earth Day tradition to clean up the adopted stretch of roadway, which serves as an entrance to its nearby terminals.

Employees collected a total of 2,260 pounds of trash, including multiple bags of trash, several tires, large signs, metal and iron debris, house siding, and assorted car parts—including a bumper, lug nuts, a semi-truck tire flap, and even an entire gas tank.

“Our annual Earth Day cleanup reflects our ongoing commitment to being a good neighbor and responsible steward of the environment,” said JAXPORT CEO Eric Green. “As the main thoroughfare to two of our major cargo terminals, this corridor is vital to our operations. Each year, our employees help keep it clean while protecting natural resources and preventing debris from reaching nearby waterways.”

From designing cargo terminals and adopting innovative technology to purchasing new equipment and reviewing operations, JAXPORT is committed to environmental protection and stewardship. JAXPORT is leading several efforts to preserve the region’s natural environment such as championing the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a clean marine fuel, reducing engine emissions from port equipment, and supporting ongoing efforts to protect manatees in Northeast Florida waterways.
