The JAXPORT EXPRESS project is a $47 million public-private partnership by JAXPORT and two of its port tenants, SSA Jacksonville and Crowley. This grant supports sustainability initiatives at the port’s Blount Island and Talleyrand marine terminals.
The initiative expands energy-efficient terminal infrastructure, increases JAXPORT’s cargo throughput, and develops a plan to transition to lower emission port infrastructure and maritime operations.
Investments include the purchase of:
28 Tier 4 diesel top picks (forklifts)
7 Tier 4 diesel yard tractors
10 battery-electric yard tractors
160-plug electric reefer (refrigerated cargo) system
The initiative is funded by a $23.5 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Maritime Administration (MARAD) Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP), and the remainder through private funds from Crowley and SSA. Through the initiative, JAXPORT will also spend $500,000 – matched with $500,000 from the grant – to support port-wide electrification through the development of a plan for transitioning JAXPORT, the local maritime industry, and other similar ports towards lower emissions technologies.
