JAXPORT CEO Eric Green and Chief Operating Officer Fred Wong stopped by the JAXPORT Cruise Terminal today to see the unique work being done there by some of Jacksonville’s best-known artists, part of an overall terminal upgrade project that will enhance the passenger experience.
Jacksonville artists Shaun Thurston and husband-and-wife team Kate and Kenny Rouh are in the midst of producing their first-ever collaboration, a wall-sized 37-foot-by-18-foot paint and mosaic piece highlighting Jacksonville’s downtown skyline, area waterways and beloved wildlife. Once completed, the mural will greet the tens of thousands of passengers visiting the JAXPORT Cruise Terminal each year.
Separately, Thurston and the Rouhs are already responsible for many of the area’s most notable public art, including a mural at The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens and the mosaic mural under the Main Street Bridge on the Southbank Riverwalk.
“These talented local artists are helping us modernize the look and feel of the JAXPORT Cruise Terminal in a way that will allow our visitors to get a taste of what our region is about: energy, vision and natural beauty,” said JAXPORT CEO Eric Green. “We are pleased to have the creative community and the community at-large share in the success of our cruise business, now and into the future.”
More than 2.4 million passengers have sailed from Jacksonville during 15 years of cruise service at JAXPORT.
The terminal enhancements are underway thanks to the recent historic long-term agreement between JAXPORT and Carnival Cruise Line to extend cruise service from Jacksonville through at least 2021 and potentially through 2027.
Other enhancements to the terminal include a new parking area with easier access to the terminal, an upgraded VIP Lounge and an improved boarding platform that allows passengers to enter the ship on the Promenade level.
Carnival Cruise Line offers year-round sailing to the Bahamas from JAXPORT’s North Jacksonville Cruise Terminal aboard the Carnival Elation. Beginning May 2019, the recently upgraded 2,056-passenger Carnival Ecstasy will assume Carnival Elation’s four- and five-day cruise program.
